The History of Phi Beta

Phi Beta Fraternity is celebrating its heritage of over 100 years!

Phi Beta is the oldest national professional fraternity that encompasses all the arts. From its inception, Phi Beta held the ideal of uniting the arts. Our founders envisioned an organization promoting the arts through service that appealed to others.

Founded in 1912 at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, the fraternity was exclusive to women majoring in music and speech. Phi Beta today includes all persons in all the arts and continues to be professionally focused.

Over the years, Phi Beta Fraternity has assisted in several national projects.

Macdowell

Each year, we help maintain our Phi Beta Fraternity’s cabin in MacDowell, located in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Our cabin was built in 1929 in part by our membership’s contributions. MacDowell’s mission is to nurture the arts by offering talented individuals an inspiring residential environment to produce enduring works of the creative imagination.

Bold note

As part of a program for the Library of Congress & National Library Service (NLS)  for the Blind and Sight Disabled, Phi Beta Fraternity participated in producing hand-enlarging sheet music for the visually impaired.

USO

The United States Organization, Inc. is an American nonprofit charitable corporation that provides live entertainment, such as comedians, actors, musicians, social facilities, and other programs to members of the United States Armed Forces and their families.

Phi Betas participated in other USO services: a military tour performing a Variety Tour; giving a Mobile Unit gift to the Red Cross; donating record albums to military service clubs; and touring the continental US to entertain the Armed Forces.

Viva Amistad

An international project for raising money for musical instruments and sheet music for our neighboring school Colegio el Pacifico, in Mazatlan, Mexico.

ESCUELA de BELLAS ARTES

Phi Beta sent a violin to Professor Innesby, a Phi Beta chapter member at a Mexican University.
