National Council

Phi Beta is backed by incredible volunteers that work tirelessly to ensure the best possible member experience, as well as the continued growth and future of Phi Beta itself. The following talented and professional artists compose the Phi Beta “National Council,” who are just as committed to the vision and goals of the fraternity as the founders were over a hundred years ago.

Holly Schwein, Pi Alpha Mu

Holly entered Phi Beta while attending the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, as a Dance Major. She has had a life-long affiliation with Phi Beta, having served several positions in both her local chapter of Pi Alpha Mu, Cincinnati, Ohio, and on Phi Beta’s National Council. She served as National President in 1996-98. Re-elected as President in July 2018, Holly looks forward to further improving the reach and focus of Phi Beta during her two-year tenure.

Eve Lee, Pi Alpha Mu

Eve joined Phi Beta as an undergraduate at the University of Cincinnati as a theater major. She has remained an active and loyal member of Phi Beta ever since she joined Delta chapter years ago. Upon arriving in Los Angeles, Eve affiliated with Pi Iota chapter and was elected several times as Vice President and Program Chair. She became active on National Council during the ’90s and served three consecutive terms as Vice President of Alumni. Currently, Eve is once again serving as Director of Honors, as well as Vice-President of Alumni. Her immediate goal is to complete the vast compilation of a list of Honorary Members along with a short biographical description of their monumental accomplishments.

Jessica Schollenberger, Pi Nu

Jessica Schollenberger discovered Phi Beta while attending Capital University. She was looking for a place to call home and found it in the Phi Chapter of Phi Beta. Phi Beta was just supposed to be something she did while in college, but she fell in love with the organization and plans to be around as long as she can. Jessica has assisted with different projects both on the local and national level for Phi Beta. Most recently, she has served as the National Direct of Ritual and Senior Alumni Advisor for Phi Chapter. She is now most excited to help move Phi Beta forward as Vice President of Collegiate.

Nancy Schuman, Pi Alpha Sigma

Although Wellesley College had no Greek organizations, Nancy Schuman discovered Phi Beta when she became friends with several members of the Cleveland alumni chapter, Pi Alpha Sigma. She became a member in 1976, was vice president and president for a brief time, and then settled in as treasurer “forever;” Nancy was elected as National Treasurer in 1992 and served for ten years. She returned as National Treasurer a short time later and continues to serve in that capacity. Currently, Nancy lives in the Cleveland area as a retired middle school music teacher.

Jamie Auberg, Pi Alpha Upsilon

Composer, author, and music educator Jamie K. Auberg is a versatile artist who is involved in many aspects of the arts.  He graduated cum laude from Christopher Newport University with a Bachelor’s of Music Degree and a Virginia State Teacher’s License.  As a composer, Mr. Auberg is a prolific writer, posting new compositions on his website regularly. He has two compositions published with Tuba Press and Alcove Publications respectively.  His piece, “Battles for the Soul” for two clarinets and guitar has been recorded with Leonarda Productions on an album entitled “Unforgettable Hues.” He is currently a freelance music arranger for Jellynote.com Publications.  As a music educator, Mr. Auberg has taught elementary music at Denbigh Christian Academy, Band at Hampton Christian Academy, and is currently a piano and clarinet instructor at Centerstage Academy. He is also the owner of Auberg Instructional Innovations, teaching group music and computer animation lessons with the Newport News Parks and Rec Instructional Programs.  He has written several books for music instruction, including methods for piano, clarinet, guitar, and ukulele. He has produced multiple CD albums, which are for sale at cdbaby.com. But music is not the only artistic endeavor Mr. Auberg enjoys; he also writes novels and produces amateur films. He is a freelance composer and video editor with the Virginia Film Company and composed the soundtrack to their movie “Honorable Men.”

Susan Detorre, Pi Alpha Sigma

Susan Detorre, National Director of Patrons, will celebrate 50 years in Phi Beta this year. She was a charter member of Alpha Psi at Ursuline College in 1970 and also was with Pi Alpha Sigma chapter since its inception. Susan has always served as a local officer or national officer or director. She was National VP of Alumnae in the early 80’s and in 2012 chaired the National Centennial Convention in Columbus, Ohio with an original presentation of Phi Beta’s history in narrative, song, dance, and drama from the American Songbook over the decades. She has written, directed, acted, sung, and danced in amateur theater but loves teaching the most. Susan keeps the records on Patrons, our jewels of artistic support over the years, and is active in Pi Alpha Sigma, Cleveland, Ohio.

Maryanne McGowan, Pi Alpha Nu

Maryanne is a seasoned energy professional. She has formerly been an executive with Duke Energy, serving as CFO of one of the major generating stations and more recently, was a manager of Strategy & Implementation focusing on institutional markets. She had stimulated policy and segmentation in energy efficiency, demand response, sustainability, and workforce development. She is a decisive and innovative leader. She has recently been named Vice President of Strategic Development at The Utility Group. Maryanne also serves on the Board of Directors of the Ohio Association of Energy Engineers; the Steering Committee for Electricity Use in Water Supply for EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) ; also serves on the Water & Wastewater Committee at the CEE (Consortium of Energy Efficiency); she is an office on the national Board of Directors for CWEEL ( Council of Women in Engineering and Environmental Leadership); serves on the Advisory Board for WEEC (World Energy Engineering Congress) and is on the Advisory Board for the WERF (Water Environmental Research Foundation). Maryanne was also a founding member of the Board of Directors for the Raise the Floor Foundation, promoting women in advanced manufacturing careers. She has been an advocate for STEM education. She serves on the Advisory Board for the Kenton County Academies of Innovation & Technology and Sullivan University. She is on the Board of Directors for Gateway Community and Technical College Foundation.

Maryanne is a member of the MacDowell Society and serves on the national Board of Directors of Phi Beta. She is an alumnus of Leadership Kentucky, has served on the Corporate Campaign for Arts Wave, and was named 2017 Outstanding Woman of the Year by the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.

She has BS and BA from the University of Cincinnati and an MBA from Xavier University. She holds certifications as a Public Accountant and Energy Manager.

Amy Schumaker Bliss

Dr. Amy Schumaker Bliss is a euphonium artist and music educator based in the Columbus, Ohio area. She was active with Phi chapter as she attended Capital University. She earned her master’s degree in euphonium performance at the Royal Northern College in Manchester, England, where she earned Honors with Distinction in Performance. In 2015, she graduated from Rutgers University as the school’s first doctoral euphonium student.

Amy is active in teaching, performing, and promoting Brass Bands. She lives in Lewis Center, Ohio with her husband and two children.

Cora Willett, Pi Epsilon Alpha

Cora became a member of Phi Beta in 1996 as part of Phi Chapter at Capital University, Columbus, Ohio. After graduating in 1999 with a Bachelor of Music with an emphasis in Education, she taught elementary music and became a member of the Pi Epsilon Alpha (online) Chapter.  She was also asked to assist then (and now) National Treasurer Nancy Schuman with the position.  Cora later held that office, as well as National President and National Editor.

Cora resides in Jackson, Ohio with her Phi Beta husband Josh and their twin teen daughters, Ella and Lea.  She operates 2 locally-owned movie theatres, TriCity Theatre and the Silver Screen VII.

Dawn Evans, Pi Epsilon Alpha

Dawn became a member of Phi Beta in 1989 as part of Tau chapter at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri. After graduating in 1992 with a Bachelor of Music Education, she completed a Master of Music with an emphasis in Bassoon Performance at the University of Missouri – Columbia in 1995. Dawn teaches elementary music near St. Louis, Missouri, where she is active playing the bassoon in her community. She is a founding member of Pi Epsilon Alpha, Phi Beta’s online chapter. Dawn has held several positions on a national level and is happy to be able to serve her fraternity.
